The Real Reason Ekomé Exists (It Wasn't a Business Plan)
Share
Every brand says it started with a problem. Ours actually did.
Sakshi became a mother, and suddenly the most ordinary task of her day, grocery shopping, turned into detective work. She'd pick up a pack that said "healthy" and flip it over, and the ingredient list would read like a chemistry exam. Words she couldn't pronounce, blends with no explanation, "natural flavour" doing quiet, unaccountable work. She wanted one thing: food she could trust without needing a magnifying glass and a food science degree. It didn't exist on the shelf in front of her, so she, and her sister Sapna, decided to build it themselves.
The problem with "healthy" as a marketing word
Here's what nobody tells you when you start reading labels seriously: "healthy" isn't a regulated claim. Neither, really, is "clean." Brands can print almost anything on the front of a pack as long as the back technically complies. That gap between what a label promises and what it actually contains is where Sakshi kept getting stuck, standing in an aisle, phone out, trying to look up an ingredient she'd never heard of, wondering if she was overthinking it or if she was right to be suspicious.
She was right to be suspicious. And she wasn't alone; talk to enough parents, or enough people managing a health condition, or just enough people who've decided they want to actually know what they're eating, and you'll hear the same story with different details. That's the gap Ekomé exists to close.
From kitchen frustration to a business plan
This wasn't a whiteboard exercise. There was no focus group, no trend report on gluten-free eating, no consultant telling us there was a gap in the market. It was two women who refused to keep feeding their own families something they wouldn't confidently explain ingredient by ingredient, and who happened to be stubborn enough, and detail-obsessed enough, to turn that refusal into an actual pasta brand.
We started with the question we kept asking in our own kitchen: what's actually in this? Not what's implied. Not what's suggested by clever packaging. What's actually, literally, in the pack. From there, everything else followed. Chickpea flour. Makhana. Oats. Rajgira. Rice flour, where we need it for texture. That's the entire universe of ingredients across our range, no mystery blends, no additive cocktails, nothing we'd hesitate to explain to a curious eight year old.
Why gluten-free, specifically
We want to be honest about something: Ekomé isn't gluten-free because gluten-free is trendy right now. It's gluten-free because that's what came out the other side of building every pasta from whole flours we chose deliberately, chickpea, makhana, oats, rajgira, rather than reaching for refined wheat because it's the easy, cheap default. Once you build from those ingredients, gluten-free is simply what you end up with. It was never the starting brief; it was the outcome of taking ingredients seriously.
Trust isn't a vibe, it's paperwork
We're FSSAI registered. We're MSME certified. We're recognized under Startup India. None of that makes for exciting content, and none of it is a badge we bought to look good on a landing page, it's a set of requirements we actually met, and that you're welcome to verify independently rather than take our word for. Where we can, we go further: our Chickpea, Makhana, and Oats pastas carry lab verified nutrition data from Shoolini Lifesciences, an accredited testing lab, not in house estimates dressed up as facts.
What this looks like on an actual dinner table
Beyond the mission statement, here's the practical version: a bowl of Ekomé penne that a parent can serve without a second thought, that holds its shape and bite the way pasta should, and that comes from ingredients you could list from memory after reading the pack once. That's the whole promise. Not a lifestyle. Not a movement. Just food you don't have to interrogate.
Is Ekomé really gluten-free by nature, or certified gluten-free?
Our pastas are gluten-free by nature, built from chickpea, makhana, oats, and rajgira rather than wheat, so there's no gluten in the ingredient list to begin with. We're FSSAI registered; if you need a formal gluten-free certification for medical reasons such as celiac disease, please check with us directly before relying on our labelling for that specific requirement.
Why isn't every SKU 100% single-ingredient?
Honestly, because taste and texture matter too, and we're not willing to sacrifice either just to make a marketing claim. Our Chickpea Pasta is 100% chickpea flour, no exceptions. Our Makhana, Oats, and Rajgira pastas blend their hero grain with rice flour to get a penne shape and bite your family will actually want to finish. We'll never hide that ratio from you, it's on every product page, in plain numbers.
What made you choose penne as the shape across the range?
Penne holds sauce well, cooks evenly, and is forgiving of small timing errors, which matters more with gluten-free flours than with wheat, since they behave a little differently under heat. It was a practical choice as much as an aesthetic one.
If you've ever stood in an aisle squinting at a label, wondering what you're actually feeding your family, that's exactly who we built this for. See the full range or ask us anything on WhatsApp, we'll actually answer.
